Oakajee
Oakajee is 20 kilometres north of Geraldton. The West Australian Government has identified this location as a site for a privately funded deep water port.
The Geraldton Windsurfing club opposes the construction of a deep water port and industrial site at Oakajee and believes that this unique section of coast between Buller River and Woolawar Gully should be developed for tourism BUT should a deep water port be constructed at Oakajee thus destroying the world class wave sailing location known as Spot X, a replacement artificial reef to the Geraldton Windsurfing Club's requirements is to be constructed in a suitable nearby location prior to the construction of the Port and subsequent destruction of the Spot X wave sailing location.
The proponents of the Port would be required to contract ASR Ltd New Zealand, world leaders in artificial reef research, design and technology, to carry out a feasibility study in consultation with the Geraldton Windsurfing Club to ascertain the best location for a suitable artificial wave sailing reef to replace the existing reefs at Spot X. The proponents would then contract ASR Ltd to carry out research and design work prior to appointing contractors for the construction of the reef.
